What Size Rug for a Dining Table? Chart for Round, Square and Rectangular Tables

A dining room rug has one job that matters more than any other: your chairs should stay on it, even when guests pull them out. That rule makes sizing simple. Measure your table, then add 24 to 30 inches on every side.

The dining room rug rule

Table size + 24 to 30 inches on each side. When someone pulls a chair back to sit, they need about 24 inches. Adding up to 30 inches gives extra room and a more generous look. If a chair leg slides off the edge, the chair will tip or catch on the rug.

Dining table rug size chart

| Table | Seats | Table size | Minimum rug | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Round | 4 | 36 to 44 in diameter | 6 ft round or 6x9 | | Round | 6 | 48 to 60 in diameter | 8 ft round or 8x10 | | Square | 4 | 36 to 44 in | 6x6 or 6x9 | | Rectangular | 4 to 6 | 36x60 in | 8x10 | | Rectangular | 6 to 8 | 40x72 in | 8x10 or 9x12 | | Rectangular | 8 to 10 | 42x96 in | 9x12 or 10x14 |

For example, a table that is 40 by 72 inches needs a rug of about 88 by 120 inches, so an 8x10 or larger. A bigger table needs a bigger rug. Do not squeeze it.

Choose the right shape

  • Rectangular table: a rectangular rug.
  • Round table: a round rug, or a square rug that is large enough.
  • Square table: a square rug, or a rectangle in the room's proportions.
  • Oval table: a rectangular or oval rug.

Matching the rug shape to the table gives the cleanest result. In an open-plan room, a rug that echoes the table's shape also helps define the dining area.

Leave a border

In a large room, leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. If the room is small, check that the rug does not run into doors, built-ins or the kitchen. If the rug size you need is bigger than the room allows, choose a smaller table or no rug.

Best materials for a dining room rug

Dining rooms mean crumbs and spills, so choose carefully.

  • Flat weave and low pile rugs let chairs slide easily and are simple to vacuum.
  • Wool resists stains and lasts under heavy use. See how to care for a wool rug.
  • Jute and sisal look great but stain easily. Compare them in our wool vs jute guide.
  • Avoid deep shag, which catches chair legs and food.

Add a rug pad to keep the rug from shifting when chairs move.
