How to Hang a Tapestry Without Damaging It

Bright room with a woven tapestry hanging from a wooden rod above a bench with a basket and plant

A tapestry is heavy, and hanging it badly can stretch or tear the weave.

Choose a method

  • Wooden rod or curtain pole. Best for large or heavy pieces. Sew a cotton sleeve to the top back edge and slide the rod through.
  • Velcro strip. Suits antique textiles. Sew one side to the tapestry and mount the other on a wooden batten.
  • Clips. Quick for lighter pieces. Use a row of quilting clips spaced evenly across the top.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Never use nails or pins directly through the fabric.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes.
  • Leave a small gap behind the tapestry so air can circulate.

Ongoing care

Vacuum gently through a mesh screen every few months, and rotate or rehang it occasionally to relieve tension.
