Rug vs Carpet: Differences, Costs and How to Choose

Rug or carpet? Both soften a floor and warm up a room, but they are installed, used and maintained very differently. Here is how to decide.

The basic difference

Carpet is wall-to-wall flooring that is cut to fit and fixed to the floor of a room. A rug is a separate piece of woven or tufted textile that sits on top of the floor and can be moved or taken with you.

Rug vs carpet at a glance

| | Rug | Carpet | | --- | --- | --- | | Coverage | Part of the room | Wall to wall | | Installation | None | Professional fitting | | Flexibility | Move, swap, rotate | Fixed | | Cost | Pay per piece | Pay per square foot plus fitting | | Cleaning | Can be taken outside or to a cleaner | Cleaned in place | | Style | Adds pattern and texture on top of a floor | Uniform surface | | Floors | Works over hardwood, tile or carpet | Replaces the existing floor surface |

Cost

A rug costs less up front for most rooms, because you only cover part of the floor, and there is no fitting. Carpet can cost less per square foot but adds underlay, installation and removal. A high-quality wool rug is an investment, yet it can be reused in a new home, and carpet cannot.

Comfort and warmth

Both add warmth and soften noise. Carpet covers the entire floor, so it is warmer underfoot throughout. A rug gives you cozy zones where you need them, such as under a sofa or bed, while keeping the look of your floor. A good rug pad adds cushioning.

Maintenance

Rugs are easier to maintain. You can vacuum them, rotate them every six months and send them out for cleaning. See how to care for a wool rug. Carpet traps dust and dirt in a large area, and stains are harder to remove from a fixed surface.

Health and allergies

Hard floors with rugs are often easier to keep allergen-free, because you can clean them thoroughly and remove them. Carpet can hold dust and pet dander. Natural fiber rugs such as wool are a popular pick for allergy-prone homes, as long as you vacuum them regularly.

Style and flexibility

A rug is one of the easiest ways to change a room. Swap it to change the season, layer rugs for texture, or choose a statement pattern. Carpet is a one-time decision. If you rent, a rug is the clear choice.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose a rug if you want flexibility, you rent, you have beautiful hardwood floors or you like to restyle.
  • Choose carpet if you want uniform warmth, you have a bedroom or stairs that need grip, or your floors need covering anyway.
