Handmade vs Machine-Made Rugs: What Is the Real Difference?

Both types can look beautiful, but they are built very differently.

How handmade rugs are made

Handmade rugs are knotted or woven by hand on a loom, which can take weeks or months. Each knot is tied individually, so the rug is dense, durable and repairable.

How machine-made rugs are made

Power looms produce rugs quickly and consistently. They cost less and suit trends or short-term spaces, but they usually wear faster and are harder to repair.

How to tell them apart

  • Check the back. In a handmade rug the pattern is clearly visible and slightly irregular. Machine-made backs look uniform.
  • Look at the fringe. On handmade rugs the fringe is part of the rug's foundation. On machine-made rugs it is often sewn on.
  • Expect small imperfections. Minor variations are a sign of handwork, not a flaw.

Which should you choose?

Choose handmade for heirloom pieces and high-traffic living areas. Choose machine-made when budget or flexibility matters more.
