How to Choose a Quality Area Rug: 6 Checks Before You Buy

Price and appearance are poor guides to quality. A rug can look impressive and still wear out in two years, while a plain one can last for decades. These six checks take a few minutes in a store and tell you far more.
1. Look at the back
The back shows the construction. In a hand-knotted rug the pattern is clearly visible on the reverse, slightly irregular and crisp. A tufted or machine-made rug often has a uniform, glued or latex-coated back. For a full comparison, read handmade vs machine-made rugs.
2. Count the knots
For hand-knotted rugs, density matters. More knots per square inch usually means a finer, more durable rug. Press your thumb into the pile: if you can see the foundation, the rug is loosely made. A tight, springy pile is a good sign.
3. Check the fiber
Wool is the most durable everyday fiber, and natural fibers in general wear well when made properly. Silk is beautiful but suits low-traffic rooms. Synthetic fibers can look good at first but may flatten and fade sooner. Our wool vs jute comparison shows how two popular natural fibers differ.
4. Test the edges
Edges take the most stress. Look for a neat, tight border and fringe that is part of the foundation rather than sewn on. Loose threads, a curling corner or a border that pulls away from the rug are warning signs.

5. Feel the backing
A good backing is flexible and even. Avoid rugs with thick, stiff latex that feels sticky. A breathable cotton or jute backing is better for both comfort and air flow. Rugs with a stiff, plastic backing can smell when new and can trap moisture.
6. Compare value, not price
A quality rug is an investment, so compare cost per year of use. A rug you keep for twenty years can cost less per year than a cheap replacement every few years. Ask about return policies and cleaning guidance before you buy.
Measure before you shop
Choose the size first. Our rug size guide and dining table rug guide give you the numbers. Then check the rug in your room's light, since colors shift between a showroom and home.
Care keeps the quality
A good rug rewards regular care. Vacuum without a beater bar, rotate it twice a year and blot spills at once. For wool, see how to clean a wool rug. For jute, see how to clean a jute rug.
